A MEDLEY OF MEDIA

During her artistic life, Hilary has tried almost every medium that is available. In no particular order . . . . pen and ink, watercolours (with or without masking fluid), oils, acrylics (again with or without masking), watercolour pencils, pastels, gouache, silk paint, fabric paint, fabric collage and so on. In the face of tradition, she frequently combines more than one medium in a single work.

As for surfaces, she has worked on watercolour paper, cardboard, mountboard, hardboard, canvas, other fabrics, whatever is available!

Hilary has also developed a number of “special techniques” for applying paint, for example using home-made sponges in various shapes and sizes, hand-cut stencils, cut-out or torn masks and home-made printing blocks. She has prepared her own screen-printed gutta outlines for silk-painting in a range of designs, including some suitable for clothing. She has even woven tiny pieces of fabric from embroidery threads to make windows for her fabric collages.
